| Stars dotted the night sky, the full moon hanging pregnant within the inky darkness over the desert, casting its gentle glow upon those beneath. Hundreds of thousands of miles away from earth the Moon Goddess looked down upon her people from her seat within the Lunar Kingdom. Sadness, heartache, despair, rage; these were the emotions the Moon Goddess picked up on. The world was by no means a peaceful place, and it broke the Moon Goddess’ heart to witness the sheer horrors and terrors of the lands and the suffering of the people. She wanted to reach out and help, but personally interfering with the affairs of man was a no-no, however that didn’t mean she was entirely helpless. She couldn’t reach out and interfere without the powers that be interceding, but she could send another.
”Send Io in, I have an assignment for her.”, the Moon Goddess would command in a gentle voice of one of her handmaidens. The young girl bowed, turned immediately, and disappeared behind the ornate marble stones and tapestry. Just like the Moon Goddess herself, her handmaidens were aware of each and every creature within the Lunar Kingdom, and currently Io was assigned guard duty at the gates - her job a simple enough one, to keep any who happened to stumble across the Lunar Kingdom out, without express permission from the Moon Goddess herself.
It never boded well to play favorites but in the Moon Goddess’ case, Io was one of her own. She had trained Io personally since her birth, having marked the child to become one of her own personal guards when she became of age. Each guard was to undergo an assignment at the age of eighteen to prove their worth, and until then they trained, were given an education, and had to perform other tasks such as Io’s current assignment of guarding the gates when their skills were adept enough. Io was a prodigy among those chosen, and so the Moon Goddess had faith that she would be the one to do this assignment for her.
”Miss Io, the Moon Goddess requests your presence.”, the handmaiden would have of course found Io’s station, bowing in greeting to her before having spoken. The handmaiden would wait but a fraction of a second before turning and making her way to the Moon Goddess’ office.
”As she wishes.”, would come Io’s automatic response, returning the bow before following after the handmaiden: you simply did not deny a request to be seen by your monarch after all. Another guard immediately took Io’s place, leaving the Lunar Kingdom well protected in her absence. While perhaps another would’ve been concerned over suddenly being summoned, Io was quite excited though she did well to hide these emotions behind a soft and gentle smile. She had recently come of age and knew that like all personal guards to the Moon Goddess herself she would be given a task or quest to complete. The outcome of this would then determine if she was suitable to protect the Moon Goddess with her life. It was a high achievement and the tasks themselves were never easy but it did nothing to dampen Io’s high spirits.
Arriving within the office of the Moon Goddess’ palace the handmaiden would return to the Moon Goddess’ side while Io herself would close the door behind her before kneeling with her head bowed. ”My lady, I’ve come to answer your summons.”, her voice was soft, laced with respect and adoration, and she waited on bended knee with complete patience.
The Moon Goddess smiled upon young Io, a motherly look forming upon her face. ”Rise, my child, and come sit with me.”, the Moon Goddess would speak as she gestured with her right hand to a nearby chair.
Gracefully Io would comply, rising to her feet and crossing the distance from the doorway over to the chair the Moon Goddess had indicated. She would sit upon it lightly, right leg crossing over the left in a ladylike fashion. Looking upon the spender and beauty that was the Moon Goddess she would wait patiently, but earnestly, for whatever her monarch had to say.
The Moon Goddess took a moment to respond, turning her attention rather to a special construct within her desk that showed a scale model of the world below, or rather a portion of it. This model contained miniature people, replicas of those who actually lived in the earth below them. She would watch through this as a woman was dragged into a dark alleyway, an alley where the glow from the moon did not penetrate, only to be shoved down hard and her purse snatched off her shoulder. ”Io, my child,” the Moon Goddess would begin, sadness laced in her voice, ”I fear the world that has become below us. These people suffer terribly and know little peace and kindness. I want to help them, but as you know a Goddess cannot interfere directly. So, I have a special task for you, different from those normally given to those slated to be my personal guard. I wish for you to go down to Earth, help these people, show them true kindness and love. Help to shape their world into a better place.”
Io was going to have to leave the Lunar Kingdom? It had been unheard of in the past. Guards were given tasks or missions around the Lunar Kingdom itself, but here was Io being tasked with actually leaving, going to Earth to help it. The idea was terrifying, and yet the sheer sadness in the Moon Goddess’ voice made her determined to do just that. She knew the Moon Goddess cared in levels the other Gods and Goddess’ did not, these people were not mere toys for amusement and worship for her, but rather people she watched over diligently and cared for. It would be an honor to help, not only them, but the Moon Goddess herself. ”As you wish, my Lady.”, would be Io’s response, coming forth from her lips with a bow of her head.

| ”I know my request is unorthodox, and that the tests my personal guard is normally given are much safer than this, but I have faith and confidence in you Io. You’ve always been a prodigy among those trained with you, and you have a heart of gold. I would not ask this of you if I did not think you worthy and capable of seeing this to completion. You will go to earth with your staff, katana, and bow of course, and you will be capable of all feats of dexterity, strength, speed, and endurance you are capable of here: I would have it no other way. I will personally see to your departure.” After the Moon Goddess began to speak she would rise from her chair gracefully, her long gown draped around her form and touching the ground. ”Come child, let us start helping these people.” The Moon Goddess herself would begin to lead the way, her guard falling in place the sides and back of her along with the handmaidens.
As the Moon Goddess rose, so did Io, as it was inappropriate and disrespectful to remain seated when your monarch was not. With no words she followed the Goddess as she led the way out of her office and towards a special room that was not-often used. This room contained a direct entrance into the palace itself, a means of escape should they be invaded and fail to protect their Lady. Io half expected to be taken to the gates, but it made sense the Moon Goddess would choose this method. Chances were she didn’t want anyone knowing about Io’s special task as she was in fact bending the rules, or rather utilizing loop holes within them. She had little to no idea how the other Gods and Goddess’ would handle what the Moon Goddess was doing nor how they would react but she had faith in her monarch to keep her safe. What’s more is she knew the Moon Goddess’ heart almost as well as her own and knew that she would take this task as seriously as possible in order to help out. She didn’t like seeing her monarch sad so if such a task would bring her happiness than Io was more than happy to step up.
Stopping before a portal looking device, the Moon Goddess would give a wave of her hand, activating the magic within the portal. At first, the shimmering pool of magic would look purple in coloration but with a bit of concentration the Moon Goddess would focus the portal onto the world of Earth below, portions of it showing up in the shimmering pool. ”I can feel your fear my child even as you hide it behind your bravery and willingness to help me. I’m honored to have trained you myself and I certainly appreciate you doing this for me. When you return you will be rewarded greatly for your service. Until then know that I will be watching over you.”
It was no surprise to Io that the Moon Goddess knew deep down what she was feeling. Anyone who wasn’t a little frightened about such a prospect would have to be rather insane. This was her first time leaving home, a feat that most did not ever accomplish in their long lifetimes, but to add onto it she was going to a world that she knew was dangerous. So indeed she was a bit frightened but she wasn’t about to allow that to stop her. She would do whatever she could for the Moon Goddess regardless of whatever consequences she might end up facing. Where the Moon Goddess pointed she would go. ”I appreciate your kind words, my Lady, and I appreciate that you’ll be looking out for me. I will not try and deceive you, I am frightened, but I’m willing nonetheless to do this task for you to the best of my ability.”, Io would speak softly, wanting to make sure that this woman who was very much like a mother figure to Io knew how serious and sincere she was being.
Smiling at Io’s words the Moon Goddess would reach out, gently cupping Io’s face. Leaning down, she would plant a kiss upon Io’s forehead before taking her right hand and ruffling her grayish-white hair softly. ”I was blessed beyond measure the day you were brought into our world, Io. You’ve always been like a daughter to me, and your loyalty has known no bounds. I am truly blessed to have met you.” These words were sincere, spoken in a motherly way, showing Io affection like that someone in a motherly position would.
Io immediately blushed, embarrassed by the attention but pleased with it nonetheless. ”I am honored that you think of me in such a way. You have been a mother figure to me, shown me kindness, love, and compassion. It is my honor to help you now and be able to repay all that you’ve shown me throughout my short life.”

| ”You cannot do this! You are not allowed to interfere with mortal affairs, you know our laws Selene!”, would come a booming, angry, masculine voice from the left of the chamber. Only the other Gods and Goddess’ who visited this kingdom had nerve enough to call the Moon Goddess by her true name; not without express permission that is. So immediately Io’s head would bow in a respectful manner, her gaze upon the intricate and beautiful design of the marble floor beneath her feet. While this was not the first time she had come into contact with another of the deities, it certainly was the first time dealing with one who was angry: the concept was quite frightening.
The Moon Goddess was not to be cowed, however. Straightening her spine, her piercing gaze would shift onto the interloper, taking in his appearance of war and violence, taking in his anger. ”I am not breaking any laws. I know them just as well as you do, perhaps better in fact. I cannot personally interfere with the affairs of mortals, and I’m not. There is nothing stopping me from sending one of my own to help the mortals, however.”, the Moon Goddess would reply, her voice even, giving off an air that she was entirely unconcerned about this interloper's arrival, nor catching her in the act of what she was about to do.
”You know what you’re doing, and you’re walking a thin edge, Selene.”, the angry voice would reply.
However, the Moon Goddess seemed to ignore him entirely, as with a gentle arm wrapping around Io’s back, she would begin to lead her over to the portal. ”Again, I am not breaking any laws.”, Selene would simply respond, pausing in front of the portal only to place her hands on Io’s shoulder. To her, in a much gentler and kinder voice she would speak softly within Io’s ear, ”Be safe, my child, on your journey and do your best to fulfill this task. Remember that I will be keeping my eye on you, and watching over you from here. Should you get into any danger you cannot handle I will intercede.”
The Moon Goddess’ words brought comfort after she was led to the portal, the entire situation occurring causing fear to rise up in her. Would her monarch get into trouble for all of this? She said she wasn’t breaking any laws, but… no. Io couldn’t allow doubt to be sewn within her mind. She trusted that the Moon Goddess would be keeping an eye on her and that she would remove her from any situation Io was incapable of handling herself. Io was determined to follow through with her mission, to spread love and kindness and peace to the world below, and then one day return with her task complete to the place she called home. She wanted to be one of the Moon Goddess’ personal guards but she also just wanted to make the motherly figure proud of her.
”Selene… think about what you’re doing.”, the angry masculine voice would growl low, the God’s hands clenching into fists as he watched Selene’s blatant disregard for the rules they had in place.
”Hush, already. I have thought about what I am doing, and like I said I have not broken our laws. I am not directly interfering, but there is nothing written to stop me from sending another in my place. So enough of this.”, Selene would speak, having turned and moved away from Io for a moment in order to stand before this God that was giving her a hard time. Anger would be matched with anger, her own hands clenched into fists. ”This does not concern you. You have no reason to be here, so leave my sight.”, the Moon Goddess would demand of this invading God. She was tired of the politics, tired of the others being allowed to play mortals like puppets while her own heartstrings were pulled and tugged at their misfortune and suffering. If it was anyone else then he wouldn’t be here, she was sure of it. He had no reason to be in her kingdom, no reason to interfere in what she was doing nor the decisions she made, and yet it was like he were trying to mock her and remind her of the rules that bound her from ensuring mortality had a better life.
”Fine… I shall leave then.”, ominous words spoken before the God of War was moving. A shove to Selene would clear the way for him to cross the distance to Io. Without a glance back he would launch himself through the portal, dragging Io with him. His grip would tighten briefly on the kitsune after they passed through the barriers, a crack in the moon forming and then resealing as they passed. He could hear the agonizing scream of ”No!” from the Moon Goddess still echoing in his mind as he proceeded to throw Io towards the earth, letting her plummet to the world below. If Selene planned on keeping an eye on this little fox then so would he, to ensure she didn’t interfere in the life the Kitsune would now have to live.

| Terror filled the Moon Goddess as her colleague shoved her out of the way and forced himself and Io through the portal, she screamed out in hopes to make him stop, but it would fall upon deaf ears. She could only watch in horror as he threw Io towards the earth, giving her a far different descent than the one she was planning. ”Luna! To me, now!” the Moon Goddess would call out in a hurried voice, knowing that Io’s fox companion would not be far from her last location. Sure enough the blessed fox came into view, the Moon Goddess scooping her up within her arms and rushing to the portal. ”Quickly, catch up to her and save her by any means you can, she might not survive the fall otherwise.”, Selene would advise before sending the fox companion, Luna, through the same portal Io had just been forced through and not a moment too soon. ”ENOUGH!”, came an angry voice in her ear as Selene found herself being thrown backwards to land, sprawled, on the decorative floor. Eyes would widen in horror as she watched the other God rip at the constructs of the portal, causing the portal to shatter into a million crystal like pieces; broken, unusable. There would be no way for Selene to retrieve Io now, nor go to her aide, as she was sure was the purpose behind this devastating move. Io would be forced to reach the Lunar Kingdom in the same manner that anyone else attempting to make the venture would: throw a long, dangerous, treacherous, winding path filled with all manner of traps, tests, and beasts made to ensure only the worth reached her gateway. ”What have you done!”, the Moon Goddess would shout, both a question and a statement of anger as she rose to her feet, her hands once more balled into fists. She could only hope that Luna would reach Io in time, be able to save her before the impact killed her or damaged her in a way that she would be helpless and hopeless in the world below. ”I stopped you from interfering and trying to find loopholes in our laws to exploit to your own benefit, Selene. You’ve been given far too much leeway in things and that ends today. If your prodigy survives, if she completes her task, then she will have to return in the same way all others do who are not born into your realm. You will not be able to help her, or interfere in any manner.” The God would move towards the Moon Goddess, unafraid of her or her anger. ”I will be informing the others about this, you’ll be lucky if you’re not stripped of your power and your title.” With that the God would simply vanish in a puff of smoke, his threats made loud and clear. He had done the job he had come to do, there was no point in going back and forth since he doubted Selene would even listen. Selene was left standing there, staring at the wall across the way from her. Her anger was powerful, but her fear for Io’s safety and wellbeing was greater still. Immediately she would turn, uttering a ”I wish to be left alone.” as her guards and handmaidens began to follow her. To her office she would return in a hurry, closing the door behind herself, sealing herself into the quiet and the peace. It didn’t make her feel any better, though. So, to her desk she would go, seating herself in such a way so that she could keep an eye on Io’s descent to earth, hoping that Luna would be able to keep her safe, and feeling the agonizing pain of heartache and terror. She cared little about the threats of the God who’d come before, cared little of being stripped of her title, ranking, and power. She cared only for the young woman who was now racing towards the earth at dangerous speeds, her life on the line. The young girl who’d have to return not through an easy method but through even darker and more dangerous trials than likely anything she’d face even on earth. She could only hope Io would prepare herself adequately… Word Count: 742 | 3,540 |End of Thread| | |
